Common questions

Yes — and this is the most important warning we give you. If the evidence suggests your home is under-banded, challenging could result in a higher band. Our engine checks for this and will show a prominent "DO NOT CHALLENGE" warning if your band looks too low. We show this even if it costs us a sale — it's the right thing to do.
Bands were set based on what your home was worth on 1 April 1991. We look at Land Registry sale prices for your property and comparable nearby homes, then use the ONS House Price Index to deflate prices back to 1991 values. This gives an estimated 1991 value — if it falls in a lower band, that's strong evidence for a challenge.
If your challenge succeeds, you get: (a) a lower band from the date you moved in, meaning a lower annual bill going forward; (b) a backdated refund from your move-in date, which can be several thousand pounds for long-term residents. We estimate both in your free lookup.
No. The VOA challenge is a free process that anyone can do themselves. You submit evidence online or by post. BandCheck organises the evidence and writes the letter — you submit it. No solicitor needed, no hidden fees.
Not yet. Scotland has a separate assessment authority (SAA) and Northern Ireland uses a rates system instead of council tax bands. Wales was rebanded in 2003. Version 1 covers England only — Wales is coming in phase 2.
